The Island of Tenerife: From Mount Teide at 12,000 feet with
its dramatic volcanic landscapes to sandy beaches and lush tropical
forests in the north, Tenerife is a collection of microclimates
and it is hard to imagine more variety on any other island of a
similar size. Tenerife, the largest of the seven islands that make
up the Canary Island archipelago, lies at 28 degrees latitude and
16.5 degrees longitude, slightly to the north of the Tropic of Cancer,
situated in the centre of the chain, between Gran Canaria, La Gomera
and La Palma. The island is just over 300 km from the African coast,
and about 1,300 km from the Spanish Mainland. It has an area of
2,034 km 2 and a strangely triangular shape, with the gigantic Pico
del Teide rising up in the centre to 3,718 metres, making it the
highest point in all of Spain.
Costa Adeje Has a sandy beaches
created at Playa del Duque and Fañabé. From the old
town, a path leads inland into the Barranco del Inferno a popular
walk and picnic spot with a wide variety of local cactus, flowers
and trees. The new development has brought with it a wide range
of sports facilities, restaurants and shops. A friendly place to
sit in the shade with a drink and watch the world pass by.
Activities on Tenerife: Every type
of water sport is catered for from big game fishing, excellent windsurfing
and diving [ Barakuda
Club Tenerife ] to sailing and angling. On land there are six
golf courses in the South, the closest to your villa being Golf
Costa Adeje designed by the internationally renowned architect
Pepe Gancedo, the views from the course take in the island of La
Gomera, the mountain range of Adeje, Playa de las Americas and the
sea. The land to the side of the Villas is designated as a golf
course - Club de Golf Costa Adeje. There are many tennis courts
such as San Eugenio Alto (near Aguapark Octopus), Costa Adeje, squash
courts, mini-golf, badminton and bowls.and bowling facilities, stables
for horse riding, aquaparks, zoos, natureparks, and there are wonderful
walks and trails for all levels of hikers.
Canarian Culture: Every town and
village in Tenerife has its own fiesta where giant paellas are cooked,
lively Canarian music is played, local handicrafts are demonstrated
and sold and the people turn out in their best clothes to promenade
and enjoy the spectacle with their family and friends. Second only
to Rio De Janeiro, the Santa Cruz Carnival is a world class event
lasting for three weeks every February/March. Visitors and performers
arrive from all over the world to participate and enjoy the entertaining,
spectacular and culinary extravaganza.
Cuisine of Tenerife: You will be
spoilt by choice from the Great British breakfast, beloved of holiday
makers to first class restaurants in the countryside specializing
in Canarian and Spanish food. On the coast in any of the fishing
villages in the South there is a mouth-watering variety of the freshest
seafood available at incredible prices. On the international side
in the South we have Thai, Indian, Belgian, French, Moroccan, Lebanese,
Chinese, Swiss, German, Italian, Vietnamese, Mexican, Japanese.
There are local wines, the origins of vineyards in the Canary Islands,
and particularly in Tenerife, date back to the time of the conquest
by the Kingdom of Castile. The varieties of grapevine brought by
settlers tended to be white, suitable for making strong wines, which
were easier to conserve.
Carnivals: Celebrated during February,
carnivals are the most important celebrations in all the districts
of Tenerife particularly in the capital Santa Cruz.

Music Festival of the Canary Islands: (June) One of the most prestigious
European classical music festivals with the best performers and
orchestras taking part.
Opera Season: (October, November and December) Organised by the
Tenerife association of Friends of the Opera
Sabandeño Festival: (September) Folklore Music Festival with
Canary and Foreign groups in La Laguna during the festivities.
Tenerife, a Way of Life: Ask anyone
who lives in Tenerife if they have any regrets and the usual reply
is that they wish they had came here sooner. The way of life in
the Canaries is more relaxed. People have more time for other people
– they smile more, feel healthier, are more active and generally
get more out of life.
